In memoriam: Gary Rivard

Gary Rivard was always (in all ways) larger than life. His booming laugh spilled out into many rooms as he trekked to destinations most of us know only vaguely as distant map points.

From Japan where he met the beautiful woman who became his bride, to Abu Dhabi to teach English, and on many trips to Amsterdam, where we spent the millennium dancing in the streets, dodging fireworks and spilling champagne.

Gary had a sharp mind and a sarcastic tongue, and he loved to make people laugh. I can hear him saying, “Why do they call it the Causeway? Because it goes wayyy across the lake.”

That was Gary Rivard. Our dear friend.
